Radical Survivor Space

A space on Patreon for Mad / mentally ill / neurodivergent survivors* to connect with and learn from one another, and to depathologise abuse and survival.

While many people find healing and validation through the psychiatric system, many more are harmed, revictimised and retraumatised.

That harm may not always be immediate. The act of diagnosing survivors with labels that locate the roots of their struggles primarily within themselves can set survivors up for revictimisation and make it less likely that they'll be able to recognise themselves as survivors.

The system discourages education on abuse and most psych workers are uneducated about the dynamics of abuse, while the vast majority of what they treat are the impacts of abuse. This is so harmful.

People are also frequently coerced into giving up their survival strategies, from self-harm to eating 'disorders' to dissociation, all of which are usually pathologised as wrong.

Punishment, control, coercion and disempowerment define this system. Survivors need spaces outside of this where we can depathologise what we've been taught to see as "symptoms" and "disorders," where we can make sense of our experiences on our own terms, and where we can better understand the dynamics of abuse. I believe that we are powerful when we unite outside of the Mental Health Industrial Complex and that Mad / mentally ill / neurodivergent people have a lot of wisdom to share with one another.

Survivors need spaces outside of psychiatry

- A monthly newsletter on abuse, trauma, madness, and survivorship, as well as harm reduction resources.

- Regular peer support spaces and workshops themed around depathologising our madness and our survival strategies.

- An ongoing peer support space for COVID realists.

Joining gives you access to:

Join here

- To help us better make sense of our experiences and struggles outside of the Western mental health system.

- To share resources and advice with one another for navigating our trauma and disabilities.

- To make sense of our survival strategies (eg such as 'self-harm,' dissociation, suicidality) in non-pathologising ways that actually honour the needs they can serve or view them as just natural parts of life.

- To better understand the dynamics and causes of abuse so that we can better identify the tactics of abusers.

- To politicise our suffering, which psychiatry intentionally depoliticises. The suffering of survivors holds so much revolutionary potential that is being stifled by psychiatry.

- To potentially find relief and healing for our struggles, as healing is meant to take place in relationship, and not just in a therapist's office.

* Although this is a survivor-centric space, you don't have to identify as a survivor to join.

The more people that join as paid members, the more sponsored memberships I’ll be able to give away to folks who can’t afford to pay. Becoming a paid member helps me to sustain this work long-term by compensating my time, labour and knowledge. I appreciate all paid members for helping me to make this space more accessible to others!
